Understanding Pediatric Cancers

Pediatric cancers are different from adult cancers, primarily due to the fact that it isn't clear what causes childhood cancer. The Cancer Center has the largest pediatric oncology research effort in Michigan. Studies are ongoing to better understand genetic mechanisms underlying neuroblastoma, acute leukemia and brain tumors. Other studies are directed toward improving patients' own defenses against cancer, mostly those of the white blood cells (leukemias), brain, bone, the lymphatic system, and tumors of the muscles, kidneys and nervous system.
