Fertility

Fertility refers to the potential to have children

Cancer can severely impact upon fertility, resulting in infertility. Surgery, radiation therapy, as well as chemotherapy all contribute to temporary or permanent infertility for some cancer patients due to the impact of the treatment.

Some cancers, such as testicular and uterine cancer, also result in infertility since they impact organs responsible for male or female fertility.

The U-M Cancer Center has partnered with the U-M Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the U-M Assisted Reproductive Technologies Laboratory to offer the Fertility Counseling and Gamete Cryopreservation Program (FCGCP). The FCGCP provides counseling and education to patients newly-diagnosed with cancer and receiving treatment at U-M.
