The Ties that Bind

What a Wonderful Day!

Deforia Lan, PhD photoThe Circle of Care Cancer Fund, Saint Joseph Mercy McAuley Cancer Care Center and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center held a Cancer Survivors’ Day party — Celebrating the Rhythms of Life on Sunday, June 9, 2002.

The focus of the day was the healing power of music. Deforia Lane, PhD, cancer survivor and director of the Music Therapy Program at Ireland Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio, gave an interactive presentation exploring the relationship between music and wellness. Dr. Lane shared how her experience with music, medicine and therapy can help each of us lead our lives to the fullest.

A local drumming circle, the Rhythm Quest Drum and Dance Troupe, greeted guests as they enter the event and will perform a special closing ceremony. It was an afternoon of in-door fun, including an information fair on survivorship issues, door prizes, light refreshments and a chance to learn the art of drumming.

This event was held in conjunction with celebrations of life in more than 700 communities throughout the nation and elsewhere as part of the 15th annual National Cancer Survivors Day® Celebration. At this time we pause to celebrate the lives of all people around the world who are living with a history of cancer, and focus attention on the issues of survivorship. It is also a time to acknowledge those professionals dedicated to cancer treatment, research and support services. A “survivor” is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.
