GERMLINE VARIANT
A DNA variant that can be passed on to sons & daughters.

DNA
(The chemical that makes up the genetic material of chromosomes

LOCUS
The specific location of a gene or DNA sequence on a chromosome

ALLELE
One of the two versions of any given gene that are carried by an individual

GENE
A section of the DNA that contains instructions for making a specific protein

CHROMOSOME
The combination of DNA and proteins that together make up packaged genetic material

EXOME
The portion of the genome that contains the information for making proteins

GENOME
The full set of genes possessed by an organism

AUTOSOME
Any of the 22 paired chromosomes that each human has (that is any chromosome other than the X or Y chromosome

SNP
A genetic variant that occurs when a single nucleotide in the genome sequence is replaced by another

NUCLEOTIDE
The basic chemical building block, or monomer, of a DNA polymer, (A,T,C,G)
