Women with mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes face dramatically increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer in their lifetime. Working closely with the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Clinic, Dr. Pearlman offers management, follow-up care and monitoring for those who test positive for a BRCA gene mutation. Amongst the management options to reduce cancer risk includes minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) to remove tubes and ovaries (bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy). Dr. Pearlman is part of a multidisciplinary team including medical oncologists, surgical oncologists and plastic reconstructive surgeons with specific expertise in breast cancer and BRCA mutation management. In addition, Dr. Pearlman sees patients in the Breast Care Clinic who are referred for breast problems, including breast masses, abnormal mammograms, breast pain or nipple discharge. He performs breast procedures when needed, such as fine needle aspirations, core biopsies and excisional breast biopsies. |
