Prevention & Risk Assessment

Cancer is a generalized term for diseases in which cells, once normal parts of the body, become abnormal and divide without control. These cancer cells can then invade nearby tissues; sometimes spreading through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body. In spite of much research, there is no definitive cause of cancer. Research does show there are specific factors that lead to the development of cancer; specifically environmental factors, diet, lifestyle and genetic predisposition [see Risk Assessment for more information].

Prevention refers to making different lifestyle and nutritional choices to help reduce the chances of cancer. In addition, prevention also refers to undergoing screening for cancer. It is well known that early detection for cervical, breast, prostate and colon cancer results in long-term remission.

Risk Assessment Clinics and Information:

Risk Assessment refers to the connection between some forms of cancer and genetics. The Cancer Center has two clinics focused on assessing the genetic risk faced by some individuals to develop cancer: the Breast & Ovarian Risk Evaluation Clinic; and the Cancer Genetics Clinic. In addition, our Urologic Oncology Program has established the Prostate Genetics Project, a long-term study on the possible genetic causes of prostate cancer.
