Home > Newsroom > News Archive U-M Cancer Center Named as Beneficiary of "FFANY" Shoes on Saleoriginally posted August 16, 2001 ANN ARBOR, MI - The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center announces today that it has been selected as one of the beneficiaries of the eighth annual QVC presents ""FFANY Shoes On Sale," a televised fundraiser benefiting breast cancer research and education programs. More than 100,000 pairs of designer shoes from members of the Fashion Footwear Association of New York (FFANY), will be offered at half the retail price with a portion of the net proceeds benefiting the U-M Cancer Center. Shoes On Sale will air live on QVC on WEDNESDAY, OCT. 3 (7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m., ET). "The University of Michigan is honored and excited to be a part of this year's Shoes On Sale benefit," said Daniel Hayes, M.D., Director of the U-M's Breast Oncology Program. "This is a national event that will directly impact our local community by providing funding for our research center and will help increase breast cancer education and awareness for women everywhere." "The Fashion Footwear Charitable Foundation and QVC selected the University of Michigan Cancer Center as a beneficiary of Shoes On Sale because of their ground-breaking breast cancer research, state-of-the-art facility and the level of care they provide their patients," said Joseph Moore, president of FFANY. QVC president, Doug Briggs stated, "We are proud to be working with our many vendors and with FFANY to help raise funding and awareness for such renowned women's cancer research centers. Since this event began seven years ago, Shoes on Sale has raised more than $9 million dollars for breast cancer research and education programs at prominent cancer centers nationwide." This is the inaugural year for the U-M Cancer Center to serve as a beneficiary of QVC Presents "FFANY Shoes On Sale." The seven facilities selected for the 2001 event are: Cedars-Sinai Research For Women's Cancers, Los Angeles, CA.; The Gillette Center For Women's Cancers At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA; Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, Baltimore, MD; Long Island Cancer Center At Stony Brook University Stony Brook, NY; The Mary-Claire King Laboratory At University Of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA; University Of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ann Arbor, MI and University Of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA. With more than 650,000 pairs of shoes sold since the first benefit event in October 1994, the 2001 gala is expected to bring the cumulative proceeds to over $10 million. Each of the selected facilities concentrates on individual facets of breast cancer research. The University of Michigan Cancer Center has a concentration in translational research - taking findings from the lab and applying them to the clinic and vice versa. In addition to the "FFANY Shoes On Sale" three-hour gala special, QVC also features "Shoe of the Day" segments every weekday (7:00 - 9:00 a.m., ET) throughout the month of October during "The QVC Morning Show." The University of Michigan Cancer Center was established in 1986 and shortly thereafter designated a "comprehensive" center by the National Cancer Institute.
