Candle
for Hope and Remembrance
The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center held a Candle
Lighting for Hope and Remembrance on Friday, Sept. 21, under the front
entrance canopy of the Cancer Center. More than 350 guests attended, including
bereaved family members and friends, healthcare providers and cancer survivors.
Beyond those who attended, families from throughout Michigan
and Northern Ohio shared the names of loved ones who had died from cancer.
The names were entered into a Memorial Book to be preserved at the U-M
Cancer Center.
The Voices of Healing choir performed, along with soloists and a bagpiper
playing Amazing Grace.
Guests brought small momentos and photographs of their loved ones that
were displayed during the ceremony.
Throughout the evening, photos of Everyday Heroes were displayed on video
screens as reminders of the lives touched by cancer. Everyday Heroes -
cancer survivors and those lost to the disease, researchers, health care
providers, families, friends and caregivers - are the hope for a future
where cancer no longer exists.
U-M physician Frank Worden (below left) was one of the guest candle lighters
who began the ceremony. Each of the guest candle lighters said a
few words to honor or remember a special friend or family member.
