Benefit Ushers in Spring and Supports Cancer Center The University of Michigan Cancer Center partnered with Ford Motor Company for the 11th annual Spring to Life Brunch and Art Auction. Once again, Cousins Heritage Inn, Food For All Seasons, The Common Grill and The Moveable Feast united with Fine Flowers for a magnificent array of culinary and floral creations.
Laurie Carr, a Volunteer Appreciation Awardee, accepts a Spring to Life Glass Tulip to recognize her commitment and dedication to the Cancer Center. Other awardees included Antoinette Benjamin of Food For All Seasons; Craig Common of The Common Grill; Karin Wagner Coran of Format Framing & Gallery; and Trish DeBoer of DeBoer Gallery.
Guests marveled at the silent auction items, which were graciously donated by more than 160 artists from across the country. There was quite a variety of art - from hand-blown glass vases and beaded jewelry to hand-painted furniture. The bids were generous and nearly every item found a new home.
Cherie Rehkopf of Fine Flowers provided an extravagant spring display of tulips, daisies and lilies to welcome the guests in from the cold, wintry day.
Dr. Max Wicha addressed more than 500 guests and volunteers gathered to support the U-M Cancer Center on Sunday, April 1, at Washtenaw Community College. This year's event raised more than $230,000 through private and corporate donations.

Call for Patient Art Entries The Cancer Center is calling for patient art entries for a Survivors Gallery exhibit scheduled for this fall. A Healing Journey: Confronting Cancer through Art will focus on the impact of cancer and will seek to demonstrate powerful coping skills that inspire other patients as they travel on this journey. Works should demonstrate courage and triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Any media will be accepted for jurying; artists are asked to submit three color slides. The Cancer Center Art Selection Committee will use the "blind" process to make an initial selection and finalists for the fall show will be selected by juror review of artist statements. Selections from these entries will also be made for future individual gallery shows. The jurors will include oncology nurses, patients services representatives, the Center's art therapist and patient artists. The Survivors Gallery, located on Level B1 of the Cancer Center, is a place of hope and community for all touched by cancer. To date, the gallery has mounted the art of the late Merrill Shapero, a national traveling show of herbal quilts, the Michigan ovarian quilt squares and, most recently, the work of Helen Fiorentino on loan from Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington, DC. Future shows will feature children's art, staff work and a special guided-imagery interactive display. |
