PERC Mobile Goes High Tech: New Funding Supports Popular The Librarian Is In Program

For just over a year, Cancer Center Librarian Ruti Volk has been mobile.

It has been part of her mission as the Patient Education Resource Center coordinator to take the valuable cancer information she collects directly to the people who need it. As part of her popular The Librarian Is In program, Ruti uses a cart affectionately called the PERC Mobile to make her monthly visits to the pediatric infusion clinic and adult and pediatric in-patient units. She provides individualized consultations with patients right where they are receiving care.

"The Internet is a wonderful tool -- providing access to a multitude of health information, but that includes inaccurate, out-of-date and misleading information as well," says Ruti. "Learning to use the Internet and locating quality information requires time, skills and knowledge that not all patients have. The newly 'wired' PERC Mobile helps overcome those challenges," she explains.

Formerly stocked solely with brochures, pamphlets and handouts, the PERC Mobile now has a state-of-the-art laptop computer with Internet access and portable printer thanks to a generous grant recently awarded by the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan.

The Librarian Is In program provides an opportunity for patients to connect with an information professional who can help them find the personalized information they need to cope with their own or their child's illness.

One parent said, I wanted information and didn't know where to find it. Ruti provided perfect information in perfect timing.
