Ann Arbor - A researcher from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center was among 31 scientists awarded $1.5 million as part of the National Institutes of Health's New Innovator Awards, the agency announced today. Ronald Buckanovich, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan Medical School, will develop a mouse model of cancer that expresses human tumor vessels and can be used to develop new treatments targeting these structures. This will allow his lab to test a potential new therapy for ovarian cancer that targets human tumor blood vessels. "No similar model for testing in animals currently exists, which has limited efforts to further this research. This award will allow us to develop a mouse model in which we can test antibodies targeting human tumor blood vessels as a potential new treatment for ovarian cancer," Buckanovich says. The New Innovator Awards recognize scientists in the early stages of their careers, enabling them to pursue exceptionally innovative approaches that could transform biomedical and behavioral science. The program is part of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, a series of initiatives intended to accelerate the translation of research to improvements in public health. "Nothing is more important to me than stimulating and sustaining deep innovation, especially for early career investigators and despite challenging budgetary times. These highly creative researchers are tackling important scientific challenges with bold ideas and inventive technologies that promise to break through barriers and radically shift our understanding," said NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D.
