Ann Arbor - It can take away your voice, you jaw and your ability to swallow food, but throat cancer also can be treated if caught early enough. In an effort to do just that, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and the U-M Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, along with Cancer AnswerLine™, will offer free throat cancer screenings by appointment on Saturday, April 28. The event, which coincides with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, will also offer smoking cessation counseling and other resources and information about throat cancer. Trouble swallowing food, mouth soreness and a persistent hoarseness are all symptoms of throat cancer. Smoking, chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol are also risk factors for throat cancer. "Screening events like this are critical in helping to identify patients with previously undetected cancers, especially for those without access to health care or without insurance," says Norman D. Hogikyan, M.D., professor of otolaryngology at U-M. "It's also important to offer education about the causes of throat cancer, such as smoking and tobacco use, as well as alcohol abuse." The cancer screening exams take about 45 minutes. To register for the event, call 800-865-1125. Registration priority will be given to those who do not have insurance. Free parking or bus transportation are provided and refreshments will be served. Event Information:
