The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center will present its 18th annual Cancer Survivors' Day event with a message of fostering hope through cancer treatment and beyond. The free celebration will be from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Washtenaw Community College.

Sandy Reoma, one of the event's planning committee members and a lung cancer survivor, says she looks forward to the celebratory and positive nature of Survivors' Day.

"To go to the event and see the hundreds of people who have survived this disease, it's a very uplifting experience," she says. "I;ve attended every year since my diagnosis, and the helpful and supportive atmosphere makes it such a great event."

National Cancer Survivors' Day began in 1987 as a way to show that a cancer diagnosis is not an automatic death sentence. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship defines a cancer survivor as anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. There are now 12 million cancer survivors in the United States.

The U-M event will allow survivors and their families to explore informational exhibits and resources focused on healthy lifestyle choices, cancer research and advocacy, and supportive services. Keynote speaker Lynne Eldridge, M.D., researches and speaks internationally on cancer prevention and nutrition. She is the coauthor of Avoiding Cancer One Day at a Time, which focuses on avoiding carcinogens and implementing changes that modify cancer-causing factors.

The event will also include entertainment, light refreshments and door prizes.

The free Cancer Survivors' Day event is open to any cancer survivors, including family and friends. Survivors do not need to have been treated at U-M to attend.
