Men's Fellowship Breakfast to focus on colon cancer and weight loss-added 05/10/10
Ann Arbor - The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center will host a Men's Fellowship Breakfast on Saturday, May 15, at the Marriott Conference Center at Eagle Crest, 1275 S. Huron St., Ypsilanti. The free event will explore the effects and risks of colon cancer and weight loss as they pertain to men.
The event will feature a hot breakfast, door prizes and two expert speakers who will lead discussions about colon cancer and weight loss. John Carethers, M.D., will speak on colon cancer. Carethers is a leading gastroenterologist and chair of U-M's Department of Internal Medicine. His specialty is the treatment of colon cancers and digestive disorders.
Pete Thomas, season two winner of NBC's "The Biggest Loser," will then speak about weight loss. Thomas, a motivational speaker, lost 185 pounds in nine months and has since kept the weight off. Both speakers will also be available to answer questions by those in attendance.
According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Overall, the lifetime risk for developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 19, and this risk is slightly higher in men than in women.
"Because they have an increased risk for developing colon cancer it is important that men have sound knowledge of the symptoms and dangers involved, and especially of obesity, because being overweight is a significant risk factor for cancer," says Aisha Langford, community outreach manager at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. "This event is a fun way to reach out to the local male community and is also an opportunity for men to ask questions and receive the expert medical advice they need."
