-added 01/06/09

Ann Arbor - African American men are at a greater risk when it comes to battling cancer. On Saturday, Jan. 10, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center will host a Men's Fellowship Breakfast. The event will focus on the importance of diet, weight and exercise and its relation to cancer.

The event will take place from 9-11 a.m. at the Marriott Conference Center at Eagle Crest, located at 1275 South Huron St. in Ypsilanti.

Robin Nwankwo, registered dietician, will speak on nutrition. She specializes in diabetes, cancer prevention and weight loss. Gyhandi Hill, personal trainer, will speak about the importance of exercise. His concentration is in sports, boot camp and weight training.

Derek M. Griffith, Ph.D., assistant professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at the U-M School of Public Health, will share his research exploring how urban African American men say their lives and communities influence their eating habits and physical activity.

"Diet and physical activity play a big role in cancer and chronic disease prevention and at times it is more difficult to reach African American men. We host these breakfasts in order to reach local community members and provide them with the opportunity to ask questions and receive sound medical advice from experts." says Aisha Langford, community outreach manager at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In the United States, more than 10 million people are affected by cancer. Lung cancer is the most common fatal cancer in men at 31 percent, followed by prostate at 10 percent, and colorectal at 8 percent.

The Men's Fellowship Breakfast is free and open to the public; however, registration is required. A hot breakfast will be served from 8:30-9 a.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring a friend.
