Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions

Cancer Center volunteer

Q. What kind of person makes a good Cancer Center volunteer?

A. Many of our volunteers have been touched personally by cancer; but that is not a requirement to join in our efforts. Anyone with a keen interest in helping is encouraged to volunteer. There are opportunities to interact with adult and pediatric patients and their families in the Center; as well as "behind the scenes" projects and special events. To create a successful volunteer experience, we work hard to match your skills and interests with the right opportunitiy.

Q. How much time is required of volunteers?

A. Commitment is the foundation for success in any volunteer effort. We ask for a six- month commitment from our volunteers. On average, most contribute three to four hours each week to service. However; in some cases one-time projects may be available for individuals or groups at different times throughout the year; such as preparing for special events. We invite you to inquire with the Volunteer Program Coordinator to determine which activity best suits you or your group.

Q. Do you provide training for volunteers?

A. In-processing, including initial orientation for all volunteers, is provided by the U-M Health System Volunteer Service Office. The Cancer Center provides additional orientation and training for those placed in the Cancer Center. Regular training updates are provided to ensure the skills of our volunteers.
