How does the Dr. Jim Fund help? The Dr. Jim Fund helps to off-set expenses that generallyl fit into following five categories, although special circumstances may dictate other expenditures as well which will be itemized under the category of “miscellaneous expenditures”.Expenses necessary to allow the patient to receive
needed treatment Lodging expenses for bone marrow transplant Emergency payments to help the patient/family
cover basic needs and avoid further financial penalties Unexpected expenses related to treatment Is there a limit to the financial support provided? The guideline for monetary reimbursement is up to $500 per request. Patients/Families may apply for a one-time grant to cover a specific request. Repeated requests require special circumstances review. Exceptions or special requests outside of the above categories may be permitted in special circumstances with the approval of The Cancer Center Director of Patient Support Services and /or the UMHS Director of Social Work. These will be reviewed on an as needed basis. How are these decisions made? The Cancer Center follows a well-established criteria for determining and verifying financial need and eligibility. The determination of financial need and eligibility for patients and families is made by Cancer Center social workers, who have extensive experience with these kinds of intake procedures and will be based upon income, lack of insurance coverage, uncovered medical expenses, etc. Who is responsible for administering the fund? The Director of Patient Support Services oversees the fund for the Cancer Center in collaboration with the Director of Social Work for the U-M Health Systems. Funds and record keeping is distributed through the Department of Social Work. All requests for funds must be directed through the Department of Social Work.
