However, if you have any questions about your diagnosis, cancer treatment options and/or are interested in clinical trials, contact Cancer AnswerLine at 1-800-865-1125. The Referral ProcessThe process at UMCCC accommodates all patients regardless of how they may be referred. The Center provides as many avenues as possible for the community physician to refer patients for evaluation and/or treatment. With this open referral process, sarcoma patients can be directed to physicians who will provide specialized care. In this way, patients will be treated with standardized protocols by experienced surgeons who are knowledgeable in reconstruction of the involved anatomic areas.Referring Physicians When the Sarcoma Clinic receives outside referrals, patients arrive with a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of disease requiring treatment. The patient is then assessed by a specialist. This may include reviewing the results of any outside tests that have already been performed. If you have any questions about your diagnosis, cancer treatment options and/or are interested in clinical trials, contact Cancer AnswerLine at 1-800-865-1125 or e-mail a nurse. In some circumstances, a referral received directly by one of the specialists may need to be directed to another physician at Cancer Center who would be more appropriate for the patient's evaluation and treatment. The specialist who will ultimately be responsible for following the patient through all treatments and follow-up is referred to at our institution as the primary physician. In addition to the outside referral process, the Sarcoma Clinic may consult with patients who are self-referred. In this circumstance, a patient undergoes initial assessment by schedulers (assistants who are familiar with sarcoma management) for assignment to the most appropriate specialist, who will become the primary physician for the patient and the treatment plan. Multidisciplinary Tumor BoardAfter each new patient is seen the case is presented at the tumor board.
The team of The team looks at each patient's xray films and tissue to verify the diagnosis and then discuss what the best plan of care should be. You will then be notified of the plan directly from our staff or by your referring physician.
