Multidisciplinary Liver (hepatoma) Tumor Clinic

The Multidisciplinary Liver (hepatoma) Tumor Clinic is designed to offer multidisciplinary care to patients affected with hepatic (liver) malignancies such as metastatic colorectal cancer, primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma - HCC), bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) or liver tumors of unknown diagnosis.

Make an Appointment or get the clinic's mailing address.    Meet the team (this is a list of our physicians and their biographies; note: this link opens a page on the UMHS website).

This clinic will consist of surgeons specializing in diseases of the liver, liver specialits, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and interventional radiologists adept at state-of-the-art stereotactic radiotherapy for liver tumors. The Multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Clinic is a unique program in that it combines expertise from various departments along with an excellent liver transplant program and a NIH designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Mission

Our mission is to offer timely, innovative, and compassionate care to patients affected by these liver tumors. As part of this mission, we aim to serve as a center of excellence for the development of new screening techniques, new treatments, and new understanding of the development of liver cancers. Patients referred to the clinic will be seen during a single visit by physicians from all of the appropriate disciplines in either the same week of referral or the following week.

Treatments

Our center has established therapies for liver malignancies which include the latest strategies for liver surgery:
  • portal vein embolization to allow for greater resections when margins or residual liver function is a concern
  • vascular resection/reconstruction (surgical) techniques,
  • laparoscopic liver (hepatic) resection,
  • laparoscopic and percutaneous radiofrequency ablation, and
  • surgery (resection) following chemotherapy for downstaging.

In addition, expertise in the various forms of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), Ytrium90 intraarterial spheres, and novel methods of focal liver tumor irradiation are also available. For patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and liver disease, liver transplantation multi-disciplinary evaluation is also available during the same visit. Various clinical trials are routinely available for patients at all stages.

Liver Tumor Board

Following an evaluation with your surgeon and/or hepatologist (liver specialist) every case will be reviewed by our Multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Conference for careful consideration of all radiological studies, pathologic information, current treatment to date, and coordination of other needed studies. A clear treatment plan will be outlined for every patient.
