Carol R. Bradford, M.D., F.A.C.S Carol R. Bradford, M.D., F.A.C.S
Medical Director, Head and Neck Cancer Clinic
Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Carol Bradford received her medical degree and completed an otolaryngology/head and neck surgery residency at the University of Michigan Health System. She joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1992, and currently serves as chief of the Head and Neck Division in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and co-director of the Head and Neck Oncology Program. Dr. Bradford specializes in head and neck cancer surgery and reconstruction, as well as cutaneous oncology and reconstruction. Her research interests include identifying predictive biomarkers for response of head and neck tumors to chemotherapy and radiation. Dr. Bradford has authored more than 50 journal articles and eight book chapters.

Douglas B. Chepeha, M.D.

Douglas B. Chepeha, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Douglas Chepeha received his medical degree from the University of Alberta and completed an otolaryngology/head and neck surgery residency at the University of British Columbia. He then went on to post-specialty fellowship training in head and neck oncology/microvascular reconstruction at the University of Toronto, and a joint council head and neck oncology fellowship at the University of Michigan. Dr. Chepeha joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1997, and was appointed director of microvascular reconstructive surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology. While on the faculty, he received a master's degree from the School of Public Health in clinical research design and statistical analysis. Dr. Chepeha's research interests include the epidemiology and treatment of neck metastases in head and neck cancer patients, microvascular reconstruction, and design and implementation of clinical trials.

Norman D. Hogikyan, M.D., F.A.C.S. Norman D. Hogikyan, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Associate Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Norman Hogikyan received his bachelor of science degree magna cum laude with highest distinction in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan. He received his medical degree from U-M Medical School, graduating cum laude with distinction in research in 1988. While in medical school, Dr. Hogikyan completed a one-year research fellowship in molecular genetics at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his post-graduate medical training in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at the Washington University of St. Louis and a fellowship in laryngology and voice disorders at Loyola University of Chicago. Dr. Hogikyan joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1995, and currently serves as director of the Vocal Health Center. His interests include treatment of laryngeal cancer with a special emphasis on minimally invasive endoscopic laser surgery, treatment of vocal fold paralysis, laryngeal reinnervation and measurement of voice-related quality of life.

Jennifer C. Kim, M.D. Jennifer C. Kim, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Otolaryngology

Dr. Jennifer Kim received her medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She completed both an otolaryngology/head and neck surgery residency and a subspecialty fellowship in facial plastics and microvascular reconstructive surgery at Harvard Medical School – Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. In 2002, Dr. Kim joined the faculty of University of Michigan where her practice focuses on facial plastics, cutaneous oncology and reconstruction, as well as microvascular reconstruction following tumor resection. Dr. Kim has special clinical interests in rehabilitation and reanimation of patients with facial paralysis.

Tamara (Tammi) H. Miller R.N., B.S.N. Tamara (Tammi) H. Miller R.N., B.S.N.
Clinical Care Coordinator, Otolaryngology

Tamara Miller received her nursing degree from the University of Michigan and began her career as a medical/surgical and home care nurse at McPherson Hospital in Howell, Mich. She joined the staff of the University of Michigan Hospital in 1987 and worked for eight years as a discharge planner in otolaryngology and general surgery. Ms. Miller has been coordinating the care of head and neck cancer patients for the Department of Otolaryngology since 1995. Her professional interests include research and pain management and she enjoys sports and spending time with her family.

Mark E. P. Prince, M.D Mark E. P. Prince, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Mark Prince earned his medical degree at Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and then served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a medical officer, receiving specialized training in hyperbaric and diving medicine. Dr. Prince returned to Dalhousie University and completed a residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, followed by a two-year fellowship in advanced head and neck oncology and microvascular surgery at the University of Michigan. He joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2000, and is actively involved in resident and medical student education, serving as his department's assistant residency program director. Dr. Prince is also the chief of the section of otolaryngology at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and has a special interest in head and neck cancer genetics and molecular markers that predict response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Theodoros N. Teknos, M.D. Theodoros N. Teknos, M.D.
Associate Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Ted Teknos is an otolaryngologist/head and neck surgeon with a clinical and research focus on head and neck cancer and microvascular reconstruction. He attended Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at the Harvard Combined Program/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Subsequent to his residency, Dr. Teknos completed a specialty fellowship in head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstruction, and skull base surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has been practicing at the University of Michigan since 1997, and focuses on neoplastic diseases of the head and neck, as well as microvascular reconstruction following tumor removal. Dr. Teknos' research is primarily on novel antiangiogenic strategies dealing with head and neck cancer, with clinical research related to microvascular reconstruction.

Nancy Wallace, B.S.N., C.O.R.L.N. Nancy Wallace, B.S.N., C.O.R.L.N.
Nurse Coordinator, Otolaryngology

Nancy Wallace is the nurse coordinator for Drs. Wolf, Hogikyan, Prince and Sharma. She has been a nurse at the University of Michigan Health System for 26 years, beginning as a licensed practical nurse on the otolaryngology/head and neck surgery inpatient unit. After receiving her bachelor's degree in nursing from Eastern Michigan University in 1989, Ms. Wallace joined the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Clinic in 1993 expanding her medical practice to outpatient otolaryngology/head and neck surgery patients. Her interests outside of the University include restoring her 100-year-old farmhouse, attending farm auctions and antique shows, and visiting her family in Arizona.

Gregory T. Wolf, M.D., F.A.C.S. Gregory T. Wolf, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Professor, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Gregory Wolf received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school at the University of Michigan. He then went on to postgraduate training in otolaryngology and general surgery at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, and Georgetown University. Dr. Wolf completed a two-year immunology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and following that joined the faculty at the University of Michigan where he currently serves as the chair of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Wolf's main research interests have been in tumor immunology, immunotherapy and cell biology. His clinical trial research has included studies of immunotherapy and chemotherapy regimens. Dr. Wolf received national recognition as study chairman of two large prospective randomized trials that have provided the foundation for changing the standard therapy for patients with advanced laryngeal cancers.

Veronica (Ronnie) Carpenter, R.N., B.S., O.C.N. Veronica (Ronnie) Carpenter, R.N., B.S., O.C.N.
Clinical Care Coordinator, Medical Oncology

Ronnie Carpenter received her nursing diploma from Borgess Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, and her bachelor's degree in psychology and allied health from Siena Heights College in Adrian. She has worked for 40 years in many different areas of nursing and has spent the past 20 years working in medical oncology, mainly in clinical trials. Ms. Carpenter's special interests are in head/neck and esophageal cancer research where she is currently working. She enjoys her grandchildren, knitting and sewing, as well as gardening and antiquing.

Heidi Mason, R.N., M.S.N., O.C.N., C.S. Heidi Mason, R.N., M.S.N., O.C.N., C.S.
Nurse Practitioner, Medical Oncology

Heidi Mason received her undergraduate nursing degree in 1986 from Michigan State University and began her nursing career at the University of Michigan. Over the course of her career, she has worked with hematology/oncology patients, and head and neck oncology patients in the hospital, as well as patients in the bone marrow transplant unit. After earning her master's degree in nursing from Wayne State University, Ms. Mason became certified as an acute care nurse practitioner in 1998. She enjoys reading, yoga, running, and playing with her three children.

Leah Shults, R.N., B.S.N., O.C.N. Leah Shults, R.N., B.S.N., O.C.N.
Clinical Nurse, Medical Oncology

Leah Shults graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing and joined the University of Michigan Health System in 1989. She began her nursing career working with hematology/oncology and blood and marrow transplant patients in the hospital. Ms. Shults currently works with both breast oncology patients and head and neck oncology patients at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and received her oncology certification in 1998. In her free time, Ms. Shults enjoys needlework, crafts and playing soccer.

Susan Urba, M.D. Susan Urba, M.D.
Associate Professor, Internal Medicine/Division of Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Susan Urba is a medical oncologist with a major interest in clinical research in head and neck cancer, and pain management. She was raised within the University of Michigan system: attending medical school and completing a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in medical oncology. Dr. Urba has developed several research protocols to help substitute chemotherapy and radiation for surgery, and she has been involved in the testing of new drugs for head and neck cancer. When not seeing patients, Dr. Urba is an avid reader and photographer.

Francis P. Worden, M.D. Francis P. Worden, M.D.
Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine/Division of Hematology/Oncology

Dr. Francis Worden received his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993. Prior to attending medical school, he worked as a registered pharmacist at a large community hospital in Indianapolis. In 1997, Dr. Worden completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Detroit Medical Center and finished a medical oncology/hematology fellowship at the University of Michigan. In July 2000, Dr. Worden joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he is currently working as a clinical investigator with the multidisciplinary head and neck oncology team, the multidisciplinary lung cancer team and the adrenal cancer team. Dr. Worden’s research interests include organ preservation in head and neck cancer and palliative medical care. He is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Avraham Eisbruch, M.D. Avraham Eisbruch, M.D.
Associate Professor, Radiation Oncology

Dr. Avraham Eisbruch graduated from Tel Aviv University, Sackler School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine in Israel. He then completed a fellowship in medical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and a residency in radiation oncology at Washington University in St. Louis. In 1992, Dr. Eisbruch joined the faculty of the University of Michigan and is currently clinical division chief in the Department of Radiation Oncology. His research interests include radiosensitization and highly conformal irradiation of head and neck cancer.

Christina I. Tsien, M.D. Christina I. Tsien, M.D.
Lecturer, Radiation Oncology

Dr. Christina Tsien received her medical degree and her residency training in radiation oncology at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. She completed a fellowship in intensity modulated radiotherapy at the University of Michigan and joined the faculty of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2001. Dr. Tsien’s research interests include novel MR and PET imaging-guided radiotherapy, and intensity modulated radiotherapy using biologic parameters for head and neck cancer. She enjoys reading, music and spending time with her family.

Nancy J. Burke, R.D. Nancy J. Burke, R.D.
Pediatric & Adult Oncology Dietitian

Nancy Burke is a registered dietitian at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Cancer Nutrition Services Department. She received her bachelor of science degree in nutrition from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and completed a dietetic internship at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. Ms. Burke has worked as a clinical dietitian since 1984 at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri and U-M Mott Children's Hospital. She provides nutritional counseling and intervention for pediatric and adult cancer patients. In her free time, Ms. Burke enjoys reading, brisk walking, baking and spending time with her family.

Marc J. Haxer, M.A., CCC-SLP Marc J. Haxer, M.A., CCC-SLP
Speech Language Pathologist, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Marc Haxer is a speech and language pathologist in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. His undergraduate and graduate training were completed at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Mich. Mr. Haxer is a member of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association and is active in the Michigan Speech–Language–Hearing Association where he has held the positions of secretary, vice-president for programs, and president. He has lectured extensively at the local, state and national levels on the evaluation and treatment of the head and neck cancer, and voice-disordered patient populations. Mr. Haxer is an instructor in the Division of Speech – Language Pathology, Department of Special Education at Eastern Michigan University and he has authored several peer-reviewed articles on voice disorders.

Teresa H. Lyden, M.A., CCC-SLP Teresa H. Lyden, M.A., CCC-SLP
Speech Language Pathologist, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Teresa Lyden received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech language pathology from Michigan State University, East Lansing. In 1997, she joined the University of Michigan otolaryngology staff and is the lead head and neck oncology speech language pathologist. Ms. Lyden is a certified instructor of alaryngeal speech and is a co-facilitator of a monthly Head and Neck Oncology Support group. She is currently involved in several ongoing research projects at the University of Michigan, including post treatment quality-of-life issues — communication (speech and voice) and swallowing skills. Ms. Lyden has been an invited presenter on the topics of alaryngeal speech and swallowing rehabilitation throughout the state of Michigan.

Speech Language Pathologist, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery

Marci Daniels Rosenberg received her bachelor’s degree in classical voice performance from The Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, and her second bachelor’s degree in speech language pathology from Towson State University in Maryland. She then completed a pre-doctoral research fellowship in voice disorders at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders in Bethesda, Maryland, before completing her master’s degree in speech pathology at Bowling Green State University. In 2001, Ms. Rosenberg joined the University of Michigan Department of Speech Language Pathology and recently joined the staff of voice professionals at the U-M Vocal Health Center. Her clinical and research interests include professional voice issues, and rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients including voice restoration following total laryngectomy.
