Give to Adrenal Cancer Research

Adrenal cancer is both extremely rare and extremely deadly. This is why research is so important.

About 200 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year with nearly no chance of survival at five years for those diagnosed with advanced disease.

Three funds have been established to support adrenal cancer research efforts:

Millie Schembechler Adrenal Cancer Fund

The U-M Cancer Center has one of the few multidisciplinary adrenal cancer treatment programs in the world. Its adrenal cancer program is one of the best in the country, thanks largely to an endowment from former U-M football coach Bo Schembechler, whose wife, Millie, died from adrenal cancer in 1992. The Schembechler endowment is the only endowed professorship and research fund in adrenal cancer in the country.

Garry Betty Fund
The Garry Betty Foundation members with Max Wicha M.D., Director of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Gary Hammer, M.D., Ph.D., the Millie Schembechler Professor of Adrenal Cancer, and the first Garry Betty Scholars, Tobias Else, M.D., from Hamburg, Germany, and Alessia Trovato from Padova, Italy.

A gift from the Garry Betty Foundation created the Garry Betty Scholars Program, which will pay for international researchers to come to U-M for training in adrenal cancer research.

Garry Betty Cancer Fund

When former EarthLink CEO Garry Betty was diagnosed with adrenal cancer in late 2006, he was determined to use his experience to help others and to find a cure. So he established the Garry Betty Foundation, which gave a $400,000 gift to the adrenal cancer program in May, 2007.

The first $200,000 created the Garry Betty Scholars Program, paying for international researchers to come to U-M for training in adrenal cancer research.

Meet the scholars.

Spencer Bell Memorial Fund

The Spencer Bell Memorial Fund aims to raise awareness for adrenal cancer research, support research and provide a training ground for young students interested in a career in medicine or science through sponsorship of summer research fellowships in laboratories associated with the Adrenal Cancer Program. For more information, please read the WDIV story, Michigan Musician Loses Battle With Adrenal Cancer.

Spencer Bell Scholars Program

A primary initiative of the Spencer Bell Scholars Program will be to sponsor undergraduate or graduate students for summer internships in laboratory science pertaining to adrenal cancer at the Endocrine Oncology Program. Scholars are fully funded for summer studies with the opportunity for renewal for another year. The ultimate goal of the Program is to increase to number of young people interested in careers in science and medicine through summer studies focused on adrenal cancer.
