October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8 (12%). In 2009, an estimated 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The good news is that breast cancer is a disease that can be treated and cured. At this time there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. (This includes both women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.) Treatment for breast cancer includes surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and endocrine/anti-hormone therapy.

This page has been compiled to help you learn more about the latest treatments and research advances. If you have individual questions about breast cancer, call the Cancer AnswerLine at 800-865-1125 and speak directly to a cancer nurse.
