Why choose to get your treatment here?

The Neuro-oncology Clinic is a part of the Cancer Center's Neuro-oncology Program. The program focuses on management of patients with malignant and benign tumors of the brain and spinal cord as well as neurological complications of cancer. We take pride in providing care that is based on the most advanced knowledge but is also personalized, compassionate, and comprehensive. Individual patient cases may be reviewed at the Brain Tumor Board for the development of a coordinated management plan. We take part in Clinical Trials of new and innovative treatments for nervous system cancer.

For most patients seen in Neuro-oncology Clinic, we provide continuing medical management. We are pleased to provide consultations and second opinions. For many of our patients, we collaborate with neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, or medical oncologists, either at University of Michigan or in the patient's community, for treatment planning. Nurse clinicians experienced in neuro-oncology are involved in the care of most of our patients, especially for those undergoing chemotherapy

Conditions that we commonly manage include the following:

  • All types of primary brain tumors. Common examples are:
    • glioblastoma
    • astrocytoma
    • oligodendroglioma
    • oligoastrocytoma
    • meningioma
    • ependymoma
    • lymphoma
    • medulloblastoma
  • Neurological complications of cancer including brain metastases, spine metastases, leptomeningeal metastases and all other neurologic conditions that can develop in the cancer patient, whether related to tumor spread or not.

Our care commonly addresses the following issues as well as others:

  • Establishing an accurate diagnosis (including review of pathology in some cases)
  • Management of neurological symptoms including headaches, seizures, and various aspects of neurological function
  • Administration of chemotherapy where applicable
  • Use of promising new treatments in clinical trials
  • Management of complications
  • Management of emotional aspects, often in collaboration with a psychiatrist or other health care professional

Neuro-oncology Clinic meets 5 days per week in the UM Cancer Center. Urgent referrals can be seen within 2 workdays.
