Our mission is to empower patients, caregivers and the public to make informed decisions about their health care by providing them access to information. Our volunteers staff the Resource Center and help cancer patients and their families obtain information relating to all aspects of cancer, such as treatment, nutrition, support and inspiration. We utilize a variety of print and electronic information sources including pamphlets, books, audio-visual materials, and the Internet. The information we provide has a direct positive impact on the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, and allows them to regain a sense of control over their situation. Helping people affected by cancer during a very difficult time is a rewarding and satisfying experience. The PERC is open Monday-Friday from 9-5. The volunteers work in two shifts per day: the morning shift from 9-1 and the afternoon shift from 1-5. The commitment is for one shift per week for one year. In addition to working with patients and helping them find information, volunteers may be assigned specific duties and projects according to their interests and background. This opportunity is suitable for individuals with strong English communication skills, basic computer literacy, some knowledge of the Internet and an interest in cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship issues. Our volunteers have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with cancer patients and their families undergoing cancer treatment. If you are interested in this opportunity, or would like more information, please call or email Ruti Volk, Program Coordinator of the Patient Education Resource Center at 936-9947. |
