Iyengar, Ashtanga , Kripalu and Sivananda are some of the different styles of yoga available. These styles and many others are what is known as "hatha yoga." Hatha yoga focuses on the physical body. Anyone at any age can begin a yoga practice.
BenefitsYoga can be used as a complement to cancer treatment and after treatment to help the healing process. A yoga practice may decrease stress, calm the mind, relax and invigorate the body, and increase mobility. Many postures help stretch and strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Other exercises help improve body mechanics, posture, and strengthen the bones.
What's Involved?Hatha yoga is practiced through the use of an extensive series of body postures, movements, and breathing techniques and involves bending, twisting, and holding body positions in a specific way. The physical postures are performed while standing, sitting, or lying on the floor. An experienced teacher will consider your physical condition and needs to determine what postures are appropriate for you. The practice of yoga does not require spiritual beliefs or religious observances.
