added 5/14/08 Ann Arbor - For any woman who loves football or just wants to understand what the fuss is all about, the University of Michigan's Women's Football Academy is an opportunity to gain on-the-field knowledge from the best.
The Women's Football Academy lets participants learn from U-M coaches and players.
The Women's Football Academy, an annual fund raiser for the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center, is a day of learning and playing football with U-M coaches and staff. It's for women only, and no prior football experience or knowledge is necessary. Participants go through practice drills and end the day with a scrimmage. The event benefits the Cancer Center's Patient and Family Support Services, which includes programs such as complementary therapies, nutrition counseling, psych oncology services and fertility counseling. Women's Football Academy began in 1999, as the primary fund-raiser for the Coach Carr Cancer Fund, an endowment fund established by Lloyd and Laurie Carr to support patient care and wellness programs in the Cancer Center. Rodriguez, in his first year with the Wolverines, agreed to carry on the tradition. More than 500 women have participated in the Women's Football Academy each year. Registration for the event is $100, $25 of which is tax deductible. In addition, participants are asked to raise an additional $100 or more to support the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2007, the event raised more than $170,000. To register for the Women's Football Academy, go to www.mcancer.org/wfa or call 734-998-6895. Availability is limited.
