Cancer Center in the NewsSept. 14 -- Dr. Wicha in Parade magazine Max Wicha, M.D., Cancer Center director, was quoted in an article in Parade magazine about advances in breast cancer treatment. Dr. Wicha addressed cancer stem cells and gene-based treatments, which were two of the five topics highlighted. Sept. 11 -- Cancer stem cells in The Economist The cover article from this week's issue of The Economist features a story on cancer stem cells, including a reference to the groundbreaking work done by Max Wicha, M.D., Cancer Center director, and others at the Cancer Center. The article also discusses the ongoing research and clinical trials of a drug to target stem cells in breast cancer, which is a collaborative with U-M and Baylor College of Medicine. July 24 -- Dr. Hammer in Detroit News A story in the Detroit News features a local family who is raising money to support adrenal cancer research at the Cancer Center. The family's son, Spencer Bell, died of adrenal cancer in 2006. Gary Hammer, M.D., Ph.D., Adrenal Cancer Clinic and Endocrine Oncology Program, is quoted in the study describing some of the recent advances in treating this rare type of cancer. July 21 -- Dr. Beer in Reuters, HealthDay David Beer, Ph.D., Cancer Genetics, is quoted in stories from the wire services Reuters and HealthDay discussing his new study published in Nature Medicine. Dr. Beer and his colleagues at U-M and other institutions found that a panel of genes could predict which lung cancer patients had more aggressive disease.
